It is my first day at work. I hadn’t done much work but there must have been something I was supposed to do. Who cares? I was rocking on my seat after a heavy lunch when as it usually happens in those situations of rhythmic motion, I fell asleep. I was comfortably in my own world now with a comfortable bed and no one around me to be worried about. Sadly I snapped out of it pretty soon and with some effort realized that this was just what I was not supposed to be doing. I was lucky that I couldn’t see anybody moving around the cube. I had a knack for getting into people’s bad books and this was getting to be no different. In spite of all the self motivation talks I was giving myself, somewhere at its end I happened to doze of again. This time it was an isolated beach in the middle of no where under the black dotted sky. As if a storm had struck my pretty island I was awake again. This wasn’t working man. People all around me were so busily working that hardly anybody was saying anything, and I wasn’t even trying to stay awake. After much thought and against my own will, I decided to follow my 6th grade teacher’s advice. Go wash your face, take a walk. Too ashamed that maybe someone would have seen me dozing off, I hurried out without even a slightest of the glances on anyone. Doing the needful and assuring myself that I could in no way go back to the docile state of mine, I geared up to prove a point or two at work. I walked in with my head held up high as if nothing was wrong with me when I had left to be greeted with the same eerie silence. I was at first impressed with the perseverance of my colleagues, but there was something different with this silence. It was too silent actually, and so it had to be. For once I tried to be upright about the way I do things and instead I learnt my first lesson of work ethics. Almost every body was in a deep slumber right in their seats with their heads on their keyboards, they weren’t even aware of who was coming in or going out. One or two who were going to go into their trance being too lazy to even try and say something, just gave me an all occasion fitting smile. I smiled back at them and since then nothing has changed.
